A LETTER TO A HERO: SAMUEL SOCHUKWUMA OKWARAJI (1964 – 1989)
Written from the National Stadium, Surulere, on the 37th Anniversary of his Passing
To Sam Okwaraji,
The Lord of Nigeria’s Midfield,
Advocate of Justice, Immortal Hero of Nigeria.
Dear Sam,
On this day, August 12, 1989, you fell — not in defeat, but in duty. In the 77th minute of a World Cup qualifying battle against Angola, right here on the hallowed turf of the National Stadium, Surulere, you collapsed while wearing our green and white. You were only 25. You died in service to your fatherland.
Ironically, it is today, the anniversary of your ultimate sacrifice, that I step into this historic stadium for the first time as a football fan. The air here still remembers you. The concrete still echoes your name.
You were more than a Super Eagle. You were Nigeria’s midfield lord — elegant, tireless, intelligent. A qualified lawyer with a Master’s in International Law from Rome, you proved that education and excellence could live in the same boots. You played not for money — you famously paid your own way to play for Nigeria — but for love. Love for justice. Love for the flag.
You were an advocate even off the pitch. You demanded that players be treated with dignity, that the nation honour those who serve her. You lived what you preached.
Thirty-seven years later, your bust still watches over the entrance of this stadium, but your true monument lives in our hearts. You taught us that patriotism is not a slogan; it is a sacrifice.
Thank you, Samuel Sochukwuma Okwaraji. Thank you for showing us how to live for something greater than ourselves, and how to die with our boots on, in honour.
You did not just play for Nigeria. You became Nigeria.
Rest on, Immortal.
Yours in perpetual reverence,
Prince Tunde Aiyekooto
