Delta Police Flag Off Operation VELVET To Enforce Vehicle, Traffic Regulations

The Delta State Police Command today, September 15, 2026, commenced Operation VELVET across the state in compliance with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM. A statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe has said.

According to the Police spokesperson SP Edafe, the operation is aimed at strengthening compliance with vehicle and traffic regulations, improving road safety and enhancing security across the state.

While speaking further, Operation VELVET targets vehicles without valid documents, unregistered vehicles, vehicles without number plates, and vehicles bearing defaced, obscured, altered or deliberately covered number plates.

In the metropolis, ten vehicles were impounded for traffic violations and subsequently taken to the mobile court in Asaba, where they are currently undergoing judicial processes.

The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Samuel Etaifo Erale, psc, mnips, led the flag-off ceremony in Asaba, while the exercise simultaneously commenced across all nine Area Commands and Police Divisions in the state.

Addressing journalists, CP Erale urged motorists and vehicle owners to ensure that their vehicles are properly documented and that approved number plates are clearly displayed.

He charged officers deployed for the exercise to be firm, civil and professional, warning that extortion, harassment or any form of misconduct will not be tolerated.

The Commissioner solicited the cooperation of motorists and assured the public that the enforcement will be conducted professionally, lawfully and with due regard for the rights and dignity of citizens.

He reaffirmed the Command’s determination to ensure proper identification of vehicles, deny criminal elements the use of improperly identified vehicles, and strengthen safety and security on roads across Delta State.
