PSC WARNS AGAINST ABUSE OF TACTICAL UNITS; INSISTS POLICE DEPARTMENTS SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO FUNCTION, APPROVES APPOINTMENT OF 9 STATE COMMISSIONERS
The Police Service Commission (PSC) has issued a warning to state police commands to prevent Tactical Units from overshadowing recognized police departments, particularly at state headquarters.
This caution comes after noting that some state commissioners have misused these units, rendering core police departments ineffective despite being led by Deputy Commissioners of Police . Ikechukwu Ani ,the Head of Press, Media and Publicity for the Police Service Commission has said.
According to Ani’s report, the PSC emphasized the importance of allowing recognized departments to function, rather than relying on Tactical Units for tasks beyond their scope. Chairman DIG Hashimu Argungu expressed concerns about the abuse of power by these units and advised new Commissioners of Police (CPs) to work with Deputy Commissioners leading recognized departments .
Nine new CPs have been appointed and warned against misusing Tactical Units. The appointees include:
- Ibrahim Balarabe Maikaba: CP Zamfara State
- Breret Emmanuel Simon: CP Taraba State
- Christopher Ado Emmanuel: CP Yobe
- Olusegun Eyitayo Omosayin: CP Cross Rivers State
- Adamu Abdullahi Elleman: CP Niger State
- Sani Omolori Aliyu: CP Bauchi Command
- Bello Shehu: CP Katsina Command
- Saka Adewale Ajao: CP FCT Command
- Ojo Adekimi: CP Kwara Command
DIG Taiwo Lakanu, who coordinated the interactive oral interview for the new CPs, advised them to work with their subordinates, establish trust with the community, and avoid creating unnecessary squads . The PSC document sighted revealed.
