A Uganda lady has been sentence over what is seen as deceit and deception in her relationship with her supposed spouse. The lady who turned down the marriage proposal having completed her education is now subjects of public scrutiny and legal frame work.
According to Aiyekooto Reporters, our source in the country confirm the incident that Miss Fortunate Kyarikunda’s case has sparked a lot of debate and controversy.
She’s actually been sentenced to 6 months in prison, not 6 years, for refusing to marry Richard Tumwine, who sponsored her education. The court ruled she must refund over 14 million Ugandan Shillings (about $3,800) to Tumwine, who spent around 9.4 million on her law studies .
The couple met in 2015, and in 2018, they agreed to marry. Tumwine funded her education, but Kyarikunda backed out, citing their age gap. Tumwine took her to court, arguing he’d invested in their future together.
The court’s decision has divided opinions. Some support Kyarikunda, saying women shouldn’t be forced into marriage. Others back Tumwine, saying she should’ve been honest about her intentions.
The sentence will serve as deterrent to other’s who have penchant in such dubious behavior, the court rules.
