The Delta State Police Command call on members of the public who have illegal and prohibited firearms in their possession to render such firearms to any nearby Police Station, Area Command or the State Headquarters, this is in accordance with the directives of the Inspector General of Police IGP Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun PhD, NPM on proliferation of firearms and light arms across the country, DSP Bright Edafe the state Spokeperson has said in a statement released through his office.
Speaking further in Asaba the state capital, “The Commissioner of Police Delta State, CP Wale Abass assures all individuals involved in the wrongful possession of arms and light weapons that a wilful submission of such illegally possessed weapons to police will attract “NO SANCTION”.
The target is to reduce the numbers of gun in circulation, to stop the misappropriation of arms to wrongful person’s using such to commit crimes and to safe guide the lives and properties of the citizens of the state.
In adherence to the directives, the command has commence arms mop up of illegal and prohibited firearms, defiance to submission of arms will face sanctions, arrest or harassment and will be smoked out to face the full wrath of the law. Hence anyone found in possession of a firearm of any type – be it a pistol, rifle, air weapon, or imitation (i.e. locally made guns, dummy guns, etc), shall be arrested and prosecuted for unlawful possession of firearm, He said.
The command will ensure that those in compliance with the directives to willfully obliged will be made to skip sanctions and not be seen as the enemy of the state.
CP Wale Abass urges the residents to report all suspicious firearms-related activities to their local police stations. They can also report through the Police Public Relations Office for prompt response and action while assuring that the identities of informants will be treated with utmost confidentiality, the Command Spokeperson, DSP Edafe was quoted in the signed document sighted by Aiyekooto Reporters.
