This signature the recent meeting between personnel of the Police Service Commission, UNDP and German Government representatives in the Commission headquarters in Jabi, Abuja the Nigeria capital.
The Commission who was ably represented by Justice Clara Bata Ogunbiyi, CFR, a retired Justice of the Supreme Court canvassed support for better and modern policing to the visiting personnel to raise the bar to meet global ethics of the profession. She used the opportunity to highlight most of the stimulating challenges confronting the Nigeria Police Force and how to overhaul the myriad challenges for effective policing.
The Commission stated that, the building of an automated Police Personnel database and Conduct of a verification exercise on Police Personnel will enable the Commission have a reliable data on Police Personnel in Nigeria.
The Commission emphasis the need for support to carrying out background checks on recruits and cadets in training to assist and verify their credentials and determine previous records and appropriate screening against criminal records or involvement in criminal activities before absorbing them into the Force.
The Commission also solicit support on the need for medical/psychiatric evaluation of Police Officers for early detection of illness and prevent sudden deaths while in service.
The medical screening will also help to reveal police personnel who are addicted to hard drugs , alcohol and rehabilitate such. Officers with serious mental state will be exposed and taking off the streets or terminate engagement.
Justice Clara Ogunbiyi raise vehement support for specialized training of staff on investigation, communication skills, ICT and administrative procedures of the NPF according to her this will enhance optimum output to the merits of the aforementioned.
On the other hand, Simon Ridley of UNDP elaborate the organization interest to collaborate, improve , strengthen on the ongoing reform process of the Nigeria Police Force. He cited Commission’s role in oversight and accountability and to explore opportunities for collaboration.

Ikechukwu Ani the Commission Spokesman reemphasize the need that the PSC under the watch of the former Inspector General of Police and Commission Chairman Dr Solomon Arase CFR will continue to hit the ground running for proficient and modern policing. He assured that such will not elude media scrutiny hence the above released statement, he said.
