PSC CONDEMNS ACT, COMMENDS IGP FOR PROMPT ACTION, DEMANDS IMMEDIATE PROSECUTION OF SEUN KUTI

The Police Service Commission Chairman, Dr Solomon Arase CFR has commended the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba Alkali for the immediate response towards the assault on a Policeman on official duty by a Nigeria popular musician Seun Kuti . The Commission Chairman Dr Arase condemned the unbecoming lackadaisical attitude of some elites towards policemen.

The Commission condemned in strong term that the musician diminished the sanctity of the symbol of authority of the Nigerian nation , that no right thinking individual has the right irrespective of position to assault a Policeman in uniform much more in discharge of official duty.

Dr Arase who frown at the attitude of the musician said Nigeria is not an Hobbesian state where “might is right” , he commended the Police officer for his calmness and professional conduct in the face of the provocation when he was slapped by Seun Kuti. A reaction that would have being more disastrous.

In a statement released by the Commission Head of Media and Publicity Secretary Ikechukwu Ani, ” The Commission demands that the culprit must be arraigned immediately and that the Inspector General must ensure that the matter is followed to it’s logical conclusion to restore public confidence in the Nigeria Police as the lead Agency in internal security and in it’s ability to maintain law and order and also protect lives and properties”.

Dr Arase said at a time the Commission is sanitizing the Nigeria Police Force with serious engagement with security stakeholders for better Policing. That it’s unfortunate that certain uncultured elites is now making the Policemen victims in discharge of their professional calling.

The Chairman said this incident should be used as yardstick to serve as deterrent to others. He admonished that a better Policing is possible with the recent proactive measures in place while the police officers will be adequately trained to interface with the public for the benefits of all, in return the society should respect men in uniform as they are the pride of the nation, the statement read in part.
