The Nigeria Police Force has urge Nigerians of the rumour making round that the incumbent Inspector General of Police Usman Baba Alkali psc(+), NPM, NEAPS, fdc, CFR has been sacked by Akwa Federal High Court as false and should be disregarded. The fake news which went viral on social media handles is disturbing but the record has to be put straight.
“The said judgment is subject to appeal and the alleged news is thus false, unfounded, and perceived to be the handiwork of mischief makers. IGP Alkali was appointed in a letter-number SGF.20/S.6/83 dated 30th Nov 2021 for a 4-year tenure and his stay in office is within the purview of his appointment” . This is cited by Aiyekooto Reporters in a statement released by the Force PPRO CSP Muyiwa Adejobi.
However, a suit instituted earlier in Federal High Court Abuja February 21, 2023 was dismissed compelling the IGP Usman Baba Alkali to vacate office on 1st, March 2023.
In the judgement delivered by Justice J. K. Omotosho, he held that going by the provision of Section 7 (6) of the Police Act, 2020, anyone appointed as the IGP has a statutorily recognized four-year tenure. Therefore the simple interpretation of the law is that the Inspector General of Police is appointed for a four year term. Retirement as IGP or age is inconsequential this is the position of the Act 2020 as amended.
It’s therefore pertinent to note that it’s four years tenure is sacrosanct and not to favour any individual this is institutionalized by the provision of the law for the overall benefits of the Nigeria Police Force.
The position of the law is clear and interpreted enough for the discerning mind. The fake news should therefore be ignored and disregarded. The Inspector General of Police Usman Baba Alkali is duty bound to discharge the functions of the office in accordance to the extant laws.
“Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police reaffirms the commitment of the Inspector-General of Police to the improvement of policing services within the country as well as the entrenchment of professionalism and community-oriented policing”, the statement read
