Clarification on False Report Regarding Chieftancy and Police Involvement in Kingship Selection

The Nigeria Police Force has denied publication made by Sahara Reporters as misinforming and misleading members of the Public of the reality and facts as regards the Position of Olojudo Chieftancy Title.

In an earlier reports, Sahara Reporters has asserted, that the “Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, passed down an order from the Inspector General of Police (IGP) IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun to arrest the intending Chief and threatened other kingmakers who insisted that due process must be followed.”

The Force Criminal Investigation Department Alagbon Annex Lagos investigating the case , has said through their Spokesperson, Supol,
Mayegun Aminat that the report is a figment of the imagination of the writer, lack authority to publish matter under Police Investigations, lack merits and unprofessional conducts in a matter that demands very serious verbatim investigation. The Spokesperson, Supol Mayegun Aminat therefore called for total disregard of such publication.

According to her , “this report is inaccurate and does not reflect the facts. The Nigeria Police Force is not involved in the selection of traditional leaders, and at no point did the IGP order the arrest of any individual in connection with the kingship selection process”.

Throwing light to the alleged matter, she stated that, arrest was carried out following a petition written by a member of the Community, According to the Petition submitted , “The petition alleged that certain kingmakers were engaging in acts of extortion, bribery, conduct likely and threat to life and demanding money from individuals seeking to assume the position of the Olojudo.

“This form of conduct is not only unethical but violates traditional practices and undermines the integrity of the selection process, the PPRO has stated in the reports”.

The Police acted briskly, through the Special Enquiry Bureau at the FCID Annex in Lagos, launched a thorough investigation, this lead to the arrest of the suspect in police custody who has made very useful information to the police and confess of monetary inducement, that they all collected money as indicated in the petition receiving Police attention. The suspect stated payment were made to secure positions.

Speaking further, all those involved in the extortions and bribery will be invited for questioning as it is the statutory responsibility of the Police to thoroughly investigate and charge same to court upon conclusion of the investigations.
