PSC CONDEMNS NEW WAVE OF POLICE KILLINGS, CONDOLES IGP ON CASES IN IMO AND DELTA STATES; ARASE SAYS CPs FOUND WANTING SHOULD BE SANCTIONED
In football philosophy, it is played with eleven players and a Coach. The eleven players must be disciplined, assigned to carry out the team philosophy with the mentality to win opponents team. The Coach who already imbibed with the strategy to win is liken with removing player or players who fall short of the winning strategy or expectations.
Having said that, in the business of security, a former Inspector General of Police and the incumbent Chairman of Police Service Commission, Dr Solomon Arase CFR has frowned at the unpleasant security situation in certain states of the Federation where security personnel has been offered as sacrificial lamb due to ineptitude , poor supervision, surveillance and lacking touch of security architecture of their various states.
The need to call out the Commissioners of Police from slumber becomes absolutely imperative as the functional capacity of such state Police Commissioner needs to be questioned.
The office of a State Commissioner of Police is not about the beautiful edifice, Air-conditioned state of arts, modern equipment but the security and protection of lives and properties of the indigenous people of the state should be the primary assignment of a competent Police Commissioner. In a situation where the hunter now becomes the hunted, it’s a clear signal of a collapse security structure in the State. It becomes pathetic and a sobering reflection for all.
The Police Service Commission Chairman’s call for severe sanctions cannot be out of place. Though the clarion call to the Inspector General of Police cannot be unconnected to the aforementioned deplorable security situation in Imo and Delta State.
Speaking through the PSC Spokeperson, Ikechukwu Ani, “he condemned in strong terms the new wave of killings of Police Officers on official duties stressing that these Officers are also Nigerians who deserve the support, encouragement and protection of the citizens”.
He condoled the Inspector General of Police, Dr Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun PhD, NPM on this unfortunate developments especially at a time when all hands are supposed to be on deck to rid the nation of militancy and banditry.
According to the former Inspector General of Police ,The PSC Chairman, Dr Solomon Arase CFR said , “the killings in some states across the nation has become worrisome and called on the Inspector General to take another look on the capacity of state Command leaderships in the country”.
“There must be consequences for this avoidable incidents adding that any State Commissioner of Police found incompetent, derelict and operationally/tactically porous should be eased out to avoid these huge Police casualties” , Dr Arase has said.
“He lamented that “we have had more than a fair share of these ugly developments in recent time and called for an integrated intelligence policing”.
The PSC Chairman condoled the families of the slain Officers. He enjoined the serving Officers not to be demotivated by these ugly developments but to reenact their indomitable fighting spirit that the Force is known for to ward off this new wave of assaults.
The embittered Inspector General of Police and PSC Chairman Dr Solomon Arase said time has come for state Command Commissioners to rise up to the occasion and do the needful.
