Dr. Solomon Arase Pledges to Address Capacity Gaps, Synergies PSC and Nigeria Police

The Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Dr. Solomon Arase CFR, met with delegations from the National Examination Council (NECO) and the Public Service Institute of Nigeria in Jabi, Abuja on June 13th and 14th, 2023 respectively, where he disclosed his concern over the need for manpower within the Commission and the Nigeria Police Force. This was disclosed in a statement released by the Commission Spokesman Ikechukwu Ani cited by Aiyekooto Reporters when he met with the top management of the institutions.

The Commission Chairman Dr Solomon Arase CFR , has pledged to work closely with the two training examination institutions to quickly resolve this challenge to ensure effective policing in Nigeria.

Moreover, with over 200 senior police officers approaching retirement, there is bound to be a shortage of manpower. He therefore express the need to deepen relationship for manpower and capacity development with both institutions to fill up the lacuna with the established initiative.

The former Inspector General of Police Solomon Arase, added that junior officers who have obtained additional qualifications will undergo short-service training with the institutions before they are promoted to the officer cadre.

In addition, Dr. Arase also acknowledged that the PSC’s recruitment system has been troublesome, but under his watch, the commission will “do what is right and complement the efforts of the police.” He emphasized the need for Nigeria Police Force to be careful in recruiting people because he believes that “this is not the age where you bring people who cannot read or write and we have to be careful with the people we give arms to”, he emphasized.

The Administrator and Chief Executive Officer of the Public Service Institute of Nigeria, Dr. Abdul-Ganiyu Obatoyinbo, praised Dr. Arase for his efforts in steadying an essential sector of the country. The institute expressed a desire to establish a strong relationship with the Nigeria Police for training purposes, as Police officers they’re considered Public servants. Similarly, the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of NECO, Prof. Dantani Ibrahim, acknowledged the organization’s commitment to educational career progression in Nigeria , the statement read.
