You’re solely responsible for the annulment of June 12 Election – Abacha Family

The family of late General Sani Abacha has released a statement addressing claims made by former Head of State, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, in his book “A Journey in Service”.

According to the author, Gen Babangida alleged that Abacha was responsible for the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election. However, the Abacha family refutes this claim, stating that General Sani Abacha was neither the Head of State nor the Commander-in-Chief at the time of the election annulment.

Instead, they argue that the decision to annul the election was made under Babangida’s administration, and that he was solely responsible for the actions of his government.

The family urges Nigerians to be cautious of revisionist narratives that seek to manipulate public perception for personal or political gain.

They also highlight General Abacha’s loyalty to Babangida, despite the latter’s attempts to shift blame onto him.

Furthermore, the family criticizes Babangida’s book for being written in bad faith, driven by lingering ill feelings towards General Abacha.

They appreciate the support of Nigerians who have defended General Abacha’s legacy and call on historians to remain committed to truth and accuracy.
