The Untold Story: Ijeshatedo The Black Spot And The Police

This is a detailed and disturbing report about the experiences of Mr. Jeffrey Taiye Aburime, a resident of Ijeshatedo, Lagos State, Nigeria. The report highlights the rampant crime, violence, and cult activities in the area, which have made life unbearable for law-abiding citizens.

Mr. Aburime’s story is particularly harrowing, as he and his family have been targeted by cultists and hoodlums, who have destroyed his property, threatened his life, and traumatized his family

There’s no doubt that Ijeshatedo is a very significant community in Lagos State Nigeria. sharing boundaries with Surulere Local Government and Integral with Mushin/ Isolo Local Government Area of Lagos State. These strategic locations ensure its significants to the people of the State. It accommodate the good, the bad and the ugly.

A visit to certain areas of Ijeshatedo on day light is like daring a lion’s Den. It is dangerous to take uncalculated step, it’s suicidal to walk at night. Night life in these areas are excluded only for the strong and mighty. Nevertheless, it is a notorious area that accommodates; drug addicts, cultists , area boy’s , kidnappers and armed robbers.

Most streets in the area are seen barricaded with street Gates with or without untrained security guards. These hardly gives no security measures to curtain but an impression which cannot halts the menace of the rampaging social malady.

The nasty experience of Jeffrey Taiye Aburime further exposed the weak security system in the area. Although a Divisional Police Station located in the Area is rather not enough to curtain the excesses of the breaches of an already established crime empires.

A very disturbing incidence happened at Ijeshatedo on the 15th January, 2025 . Mr Jeffrey Taiye Aburime of Teniola Street told our reporter that he’s a landlord and run a bear parlour business qt the basement, while his wife run a wig business on the other shop.

According to him, “I have been living here for Seventeen years (17 years). Since I came back from Europe with my family. The family has been surviving through the little business that we run. I don’t know what I have done to them to be so hostile to me and my family. Since I bought this house. I have never renege in paying my security dues, there’s no proactive Landlord Association in the Area , they have destroyed my properties worth over Ten million Naira (#10.600,000) . My family is traumatized, they can’t go to school, my wife , an hypertensive patient almost passed out. Until now, she’s yet to recover from the shock and we patronizes hospital, my business has been destroyed, they have killed me, they’re still threatening my family and I.I am appealing to the Lagos State Government, His Excellency Babajide Sanwo-Olu, The Lagos State Police Command should please come to my rescue” . Aburime told Aiyekooto Reporters.

Speaking further, I went out early morning that fateful day, ” I got a call from my son that my family was held up in commandoes style. In the process, a handful of some of the boys are destroying my wife shop while they’re not allowed out. Daddy please come home to rescue us, my son said on phone . I don’t know if to go back home or … My instincts told me to run to the Police I ran to Ijeshatedo Police Station.

To be candid, the Ijeshatedo Police Officers acted promptly but couldn’t curtain the rampaging boy’s. They equally engaged the Police ( there’s video evidences by good Samaritans to these effect )”.

“When I saw that over 20 boys was engaging the Police Officers; not even the sporadic gunshots on the air scared the boy’s, they seems to be very familiar with the said boys when no single arrest was made. My instincts told me that trouble is not yet averted. I proceeded to alert the CP Tactical Squad, Lagos State Police Command”.

The report also raises questions about the effectiveness of law enforcement in the area, as Mr. Aburime’s attempts to seek help from the police were initially met with inadequate response. However, the intervention of the CP Tactical Squad, Lagos State Police Command, led to the arrest of some suspects and the recovery of dangerous weapons.

I was not fortunate to meet their Commander but the 2ic one DSP Akpoyibo acted swiftly and deployed his boys who acted professionally, the Ijeshatedo boys were neutralised ,some of the boys were arrested , others took to their heels, further arrest were made, dangerous weapons were recovered from their hideouts and sellers of hard drugs were apprehended. He told our reporter.

Why are you the target of these dangerous boys? . Jeffrey told Aiyekooto Reporters that he was approached by one of the boys to be a member of Aiye Confraternity. A notorious cult group in the Area but refused , “I am a grandfather at 55 years. What kind of lesson or legacy am I going to tell or give my children. I laughed it off? My son was equally confronted and he told me and he refused since then my family has been a target” he said.

When asked by our reporter that he’s not too friendly in his environment… The father of three said, “that’s not true, I am open and even open a diary book with a Togolese food vendor in the neighborhood that instead of buying them substances like the hard drugs they normally take, India hemp, loud, Colorado etc that they should eat freely on my account”.

Aiyekooto Reporters, confirm Mr Aburime’s claim by meeting one Miss Shanti, a Togolese food vendor in the area who confirmed to the affirmative.

The Police angle, Aiyekooto Reporters sniffed around, and discovered that a man under distressed like Aburime wouldn’t have done better but to salvage his family from the menace confronting them. A trip to the Tactical Squad for further comments was rebuffed. As Aiyekooto Reporters was told bluntly that it’s unofficial to speak to the press on the matter that only the Spokesperson for the Police will be able to brief on it.

Attempts to reach the State Police Spokesperson, CSP Ben Hundeyin on the matter proved abortive and calls to his phones were not returned.

Though an officer who crave on the condition of anonymity, confirm the arrest and some of the people arrested has been charged to court. Those arrested at the scene of crime who has no connection has been released on bail.

To this end, the need for increased security measures and effective law enforcement in Ijeshatedo and other areas plagued by crime and violence should be immediately be adhered to especially on trouble areas. The Aburime’s may be lucky to narrate their experience, someone else may not. A switch in time saves nile

Gradually , the need for improved security measures in Ijeshatedo and other high-crime areas. The importance of effective law enforcement and community policing, should be re- strategies. The impact of crime and violence on law-abiding citizens and their families. The need for increased awareness and action to address the root causes of crime and violence in the communities. An official visit by the State Commissioner of Police, Area Police Commander, The CP Tactical Squad Commander to collaborate with critical stakeholders in the area to enhanced Community Policing should commence immediately.

Finally, it should also be noted that, Police prompt response when a report is made is not out of place, it is their statutory responsibility to do so. It’s a wicked preposition to ignore distress calls which might be too dangerous to address thereafter if security and safety measures collapse. However, it is permissive that policing is everyone business and the timely intervention of the police officers should be hailed not vituperate in such circumstance.
